Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders Sleep Apnea Syndrome

Sleep related breathing disorders are related with  significant morbidity. The most common is  obstructive sleep apnea syndrome which  force your body to stop breathing during sleep . İt can cause systemic hypertension, myocardial infarction, arrhythmia,  cerebrovascular events , metabolic syndrome type  2 diabetes inattention fatigue, decreased libido ,impotence and increase in traffic accidents. Patients with untreated severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome  have a two to threefold increased risk of mortality .Snoring , apnea(stop breathing) and excessive day time sleepiness are the the main symptoms of the disease . Snoring may be so disruptive that the bed partner can be driven to sleep in another room . The standard therapy for obstructive sleep apnea is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device. This device uses air pressure to keep your airways open and stop apneas.

SLEEP LABORATORY-POLYSOMNOGRAPHY

To be able to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and other sleep disorders  we must perform sleep study  called Polysomnography. Polysomnography is an overnight study that   records your brain waves, the oxygen level in your blood, heart rate and breathing, as well as eye and leg movements during the study. Polysomnography is also used  for titration (determination of optimal pressure) of the cpap device therapy.
